STATE REPRESENTATIVE INVOLVED IN MULTIPLE FRAUD ALLEGATIONS

Election complaints filed and ethics violation fines are part of Rep. Cachola’s political career.

State Rep. Romy Cachola had an elections complaint filed against him in 2018 by 47
unidentified plaintiffs, the complaint alleged voter fraud, coercion, and intimidation. The case was eventually dismissed, but Cachola has a history of voter fraud and intimidation tactics allegations dating back to 2012. Cachola was fined $50,000 in 2014 for ethics violations, and in 2012 he was named as a defendant in a lawsuit that alleged voter intimidation. He won House District 30 by 120 votes in 2012, and mail-in absentee ballots played a significant role in that win.

HAWAII VOTER INFORMATION PORTAL IS EASILY ACCESIBLE

Weak authentication system leaves Hawaii voters information at risk of being accessed by hackers.

The Hawaii state application allows voters to register, update their existing voter registration and confirm their voter registration address. Voters need their first name, last name, date of birth, Hawaii Driver´s License or Hawaii State ID card and the last four numbers of their Social Security Number. That information can be obtained from the state, open sources, data brokers, darknet or data breaches. There are data brokers and vendors that legally acquire sensitive personal information such as Social Security Numbers or driver’s license numbers to sell to clients for background checks, fraud checks, or other purposes.

HAWAII VOTING MACHINES ARE OLD, CONTAIN BUGS AND AT RISK OF BEING HACKED

It is essential software is kept up to date or it becomes open to attack from a hacker.

The State of Hawaii has adopted the Hart voting system. Hart Voting (eSlate, eScan, Ballot
Now) has a long history of issues with their voting machines in several states. Voter’s complaints include flipping selections to other parties than that selected. A Professor at Rice University in Houston examined the systems extensively and stated that the problem is a common type of software bug that the maker of the equipment could have fixed a decade ago but didn’t, despite previous voter’s complaints. He also said there are much more serious security problems that the manufacturer has failed to fix, and the machines are susceptible to hacking.
