There are both physical and cybersecurity elements to safeguarding a vote. Physical security measures include secure storage of machines and physical ballots as well as the chain of custody for machine maintenance and physical ballots. Interestingly, a powerful tool in cyber threat mitigation is the re-introduction of the human element via risk limiting audits. This process is emerging as the gold standard for verifying an election result. It requires a paper trail that is statistically sampled against the voting record. There are many types of risk limiting audits. It is not a one size fits all. Think of a knife, fork and a spoon. Each provides a way of getting a meal, but they are clearly different tools. Of course, these processes must be transparent to citizens in order to ensure our voting rights and assure our personal liberty remain intact.
